You rate 20 work activities. We score each of the six areas from 3–15, rank them, and take your top three — in order. So SAE means Social first, Artistic second, Enterprising third. That ordering matters: it tells you not just what you like, but what dominates.
With 6 letters taken 3 at a time, there are 120 possible codes — and every occupation in the U.S. labor database maps to one, which is how we match you to careers.
John Holland published the theory in 1959. Since then, hundreds of studies have confirmed that people whose jobs match their Holland Code report higher satisfaction and stay longer. The U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET Interest Profiler — the free tool on CareerOneStop — is a Holland Code test. Ours uses the same framework in 4 minutes instead of 20.
It measures your interests across six areas (RIASEC) and summarizes them as a 3-letter code like SAE or RIA, developed by psychologist John Holland.
